Beyond Maleme, the road passes through Tavronitis, a pretty rural village. A little further, 24 km from Hania, and at the southern end of the golf course, Kolymbari is the first place on the coast that really deserves a stop. This small resort, located at the entrance of the beautiful Rodopos peninsula, with its pebbled beaches and crystal clear waters, is popular among Cretans who come especially for its taverns where excellent freshly caught fish is served. The beaches of the village are among the nesting places of the Caretta caretta, the protected species of sea turtles. Kolympari is home to the Cretan traditional art pottery school.
