Ramparts surrounding the old city of Heraklion, vestiges of the Venetian period.
The ramparts surrounding Heraklion's old town, vestiges of the Venetian period, were completed towards the end of the 17th century, with the Cretans taking part in their construction for over 100 years. It was thanks to these last walls that Candia was able to withstand the Ottoman siege for 20 years (from 1648 to 1669). The well-preserved ramparts suffer from a lack of maintenance in some places. Above the Martinengo bastion, you can visit the tomb of writer Nikos Kazantzakis. The promenade offers superb views over the city.

The ramparts of Heraklion which girdle huin aujourd' old town have an interest to be very well preserved. The recently converted promenade allows you to discover the heart of Heraklion with equipment, without losing the meanders of its narrow streets.
The best at Héraklion and around
