20 km from the coast of Sfax, with water flower, at the end of a quiet Jade Sea, appear these preserved islands. Behind a subtle palm curtain, the Kerkenniens live, isolated from the world.Kerkennah is composed mainly of two islands: Gharbi, the western, 15 km on 7 km, and Chergui, the oriental, 42 km over 8 km. All other islands, Chermadia, Gremdi, Roumedia, Sifnou and many others, are smaller and uninhabited. A wide road slashes the archipelago today: " Environment Boulevard ". Here we call it the "carpet."After the bath of forced crowds of landing to Sidi Youssef, the road seems all mapped to take the visitor to an unknown world, but already attractive. A unique axis, it is located through a huge palm grove, slowing down in the village of Mellita, small and only agglomeration of Gharbi, to arrive on Chergui, the great Kerkennah where most of the population, in fifteen villages. Remla is the "capital", the administrative centre. This is where the hospital, the high school and the bus depot are located all over the island. On Kerkennah, no traffic jams. We will often see you passing the traditional cart pulled by a caring ass.
