Located in the heart of the medina, the Ibn Khayrun mosque, known as the "Three Doors", is distinguished by its beautiful facade carved, over its entire width, with Arabic characters, engraved stones or assembled in motifs of flowers reminiscent of the primitives of the mosaic. Apposed in 866, these two long inscriptions are in kufic characters; it is the oldest carved and decorated facade of the Islamic art. The mosque, built by Mohammed ben Khairouan el Maafiri, is one of the oldest buildings in Kairouan. Its minaret dates from 1440.
