In front of the ribat, the Great Mosque of Monastir clearly displays its Fatimid origin (11th century). Of rather massive architecture, without minaret, it had originally a role of fortress. Built under the Emir El Mociz ibn Badis, it was enlarged several times, notably by the Zurids in the 11th century. The minaret was added during the Hafsid period. One of the particularities of the Great Mosque of Monastir is the absence of a dome over the mihrab, which is quite rare in medieval Ifriqiyan architecture.
