It could be, some 500 km southwest of Costa Rica (latitude 5 ° 32 ' - longitude 87 ° 5 '), the absolute myth of the virgin island. But Isla del Coco is simply an island of paradise that is far from men, well protected by the great ocean. It belongs to the Volcanique volcanic chain stretching to the Galapagos Islands. This 52 km ² stone long, 12 km wide and 5 km wide - a grain of sand in the Pacific - reaches 634 m at Cerro Iglesias. His humidity attracted the attention of the sailors who, as soon as the Spanish was discovered in 1526 by the Spanish Joan Cabezas, found the essential reserves of pure water, but also fresh fruits - especially coconut - thanks to which the exhausted crews could fight scurvy. Next, legends earned him countless and unsuccessful expeditions. Indeed, many pirates buried their treasures there. And since then, scientists are hoping to find the big lot; the search permits even bring revenue to the government! This tiny islet would also have inspired Sir Conan Doyle - the famous English author of the stories of Sherlock Holmes - for his lost world in 1912, as well as Michael Crichton for Jurassic Park. Today, despite its isolation, Isla del Coco has a reputation that is uniquely located in the global ecosystem. What to attract the most radical environmentalists! There were nearly 300 animal and plant species that do not appear anywhere else in the world, except some distant cousins at the Galapagos. Classified as a world heritage by UNESCO since 1997, it is an animal sanctuary whose marine fauna is equally exceptional, rich phytoplankton waters and swirling currents create extraordinary living conditions. For example, divers can go to many of the pastenagues and manta lines, marteaux sharks, white-nose sharks and even the large and peaceful whale shark. In short, it is a fabulous, wonderful and worrying world that awaits you. We go to the yacht - for the privileged - and, as you can't stay, you have to stay on the boat. But it seems that there is worse as housing… two mooring points exist: Bahia de Atmega and above all Bahia de Chatham, both in the north of the island. Since 2015, it is also possible to descend aboard a submersible in the prondondeurs of the sea, thanks to the Undersea Hunter company. As a whole, this unique experience remains "affordable".
