Every July 25, a celebration in Liberia commemorates the annexation of Guanacaste by Costa Rica. Also known as the Day of Guanacaste, this event took place on July 25, 1824 and is one of the most memorable dates in Costa Rican history and culture. For the occasion, equestrian parades and folkloric parades are held throughout the city. This annexation by choice celebrates the fundamental democratic values of Costa Rica.
