MAWEI PORT

This is the cradle of modern Chinese navy. The Luoxing pagoda in the city center of Mawei is one of the wonders of the region: built under the Song, this octagonal building of seven levels grows at 31 m height.

It served as a benchmark for navigation in past centuries. Visit the hall of Manifest Loyalty (Zhaozhongsi), located at the foot of Maxian Hill: a memorial in the vernacular style of the region with the abandoned pink walls, built in 1884 to commemorate the soldiers dead for China in the naval battle against the French and Chinese forces. 796 bodies are buried in the adjacent cemetery.

This site was renovated in 1984 and includes a permanent exhibition tracing this historic battle. See also: Jinshan Temple (Jinshan Si), built in 1934 on an island of only a few square meters, near the coast. The temple was preceded by a pagoda octagonal pagoda built in the xiiith century and then by a convent.
