The Castle district, and the Castello di San Michele, the oldest of Cagliari's four historic districts, stands on a hill some 100 meters above sea level. As you can imagine, the view is magnificent! It was once the center of civil, military and religious power, particularly after the Second World War. A vestige of this bygone era, you can admire palaces and beautiful residences.

Your walk takes you to the medieval quarter of Castello, symbol of the heart of Cagliari. Surrounded by imposing walls, it invites you to discover some must-sees:

  • the San Pancrazio tower and the Elefante tower,
  • the Bastion of Saint Remy,
  • the Porta dei Leoni,
  • santa Maria Cathedral.

We'll come back to the main sights, I promise. And don't miss the Palazzo Reale and the Citadel Museums, enriched by antique and craft stores. You can book a guided tour right here.

Another must-see in Cagliari, the Torre dell'Elefante was erected by the Pisans in 1307 in the Castello district. It takes its name from the stone elephant carved on its façade. Originally, this historic site was also part of the city's fortifications, erected to combat invasions. Under Spanish rule, the tower was used to display the heads of the executed, before becoming a prison for political prisoners in the 19th century. There's nothing very cheerful about this program! Today, however, it's a lovely piece of history, offering visitors access to all four levels, including former warehouses, barracks and cells.
