Procession of candlesticks through Sassari in honour of Our Lady of the Assumption. A rite that has been repeated for five centuries.
It takes muscles to carry the tall wooden candelabras through the streets of Sassari! Giant candles weighing 200 kg are carried in procession through the city in honor of Our Lady of the Assumption. There are 9 of them, 3 meters high, and they are carried by the gremios, members of the brotherhood of craftsmen. The procession starts from the top of the city and stretches to the small church of Santa Maria di Betlem. The origin of this tradition is a pious wish to thank the Virgin for having saved the city from the plague in the 16th century.
