Mount Palouki rises to nearly 550 m southeast of the city and is home to 7 monasteries, some of which are still active. Don't miss to drive through the area (dirt roads, but accessible without 4×4 unless you drive slowly!) which offers splendid views of the Aegean and the bay of Chora, in addition to a serene calm. The area is also great for hiking. The monastery of Evangelistria is the closest, but it is on a separate road from the other monasteries.
