It is by the Maria Islands, the most western, that the archipelago of the Austral begins. Made up of four madreporic motus emerging from the great Pacific Ocean - just enough to allow beautiful vegetation to grow - Maria is in fact a tiny uninhabited atoll of 1.3 km2 of land. Located 200 km northeast of Rimatara and 400 km east of the Cook Islands, in the middle of nowhere, it was only officially discovered in 1824 by the whaler Maria and her captain Gardner; probably before that by Polynesian sailors who did not choose to settle there. Only birds flock to the dense forests that have settled there. If you are shipwrecked, you should know that fish abound.
