The Nineveh Deir al-Kahf, or monastery monastery, owes its name to its structure, which probably contained a vast church. This fort was built by the Romans in the early th century (as evidenced by Greek and Latin inscriptions). At that time, it was an important garrison that was placed on a strategic road, halfway between Azraq and Overnight (in southern Syria). Although supplied in water by a nearby reservoir, it was mysteriously abandoned in the middle of the th century. Today, there is not much left of it, apart from a few stones. In addition to being quite difficult to access (a road north of the 10 road to Iraq), it is far from being one of the most impressive sites in the region.
