FORTRESS BABA VIDA (БАБА ВИДА)

Its name comes from a legend. It is the best preserved and largest medieval Bulgarian fortress. Its construction was spread out from the ^3rd to the ^19th century. The main guets and the towers date from this period. This imposing building was successively occupied by the Bulgars, the Ottomans, and then the Habsburgs for a short period in the ^16th century, when they occupied the city. Its position facing the Danube made it an important strategic base.
