The hill became famous thanks to the research of the archaeologist Ambrosseti (the same one who worked on the restoration of the Pucará of Tilcara). The menhirs discovered in the area were gathered on the same hill. Their disposition is therefore almost entirely artificial. The exact meaning is still a mystery. Some of them are sculpted with indecipherable signs. The menhirs number 129 and were erected by the Tafi Indians (linguistic and cultural group of the Diaguites found in the region of San Augustin del Valle Fertil). The granite menhirs reach up to 3 meters in height and are believed to date from the ninth century BC to the eighth century AD.The most common version attributes to them a magical character to favour the fertility of women or the fertility of the soil. They still seem to watch over the entrance of the village. There is a beautiful view of the Andes and the valley. The Lago de la Angostura is often invaded by the boats of the yachtsmen. Under a beautiful sun, the atmosphere gives a real air of vacations. On the other hand, the village of El Mollar itself is not very interesting, as it is a resort on the lake and at the foot of Cerro Ñuñorco. How to get there. Coming from Tafi del Valle (on the road to Tucumán), 10 kilometers away, you will find on the right the entrance to the village of El Mollar, the lake and the Parque de los Menhires (free access). To get there, you should know that the bus schedules are not very convenient.
