MUNNESWARAM KOVIL FESTIVAL

This Hindu festival takes place at the Sri Munneswaram Devasthanam temple, near Chilaw, north of Colombo, between August and September. This temple is dedicated to Kali, the Hindu goddess of preservation, transformation and destruction. She embodies the frightening form of the goddess Parvati. This festival attracts of course the Hindus, but also the Buddhists, the Catholics and the Muslims of the island. Colorful processions punctuate the daily life of the temple for 28 days, the last days of the festival being the most animated.
