San Francisco is a small town in the heart of the province, with a population of around 82,000. It lies between Prosperidad, the capital of Agusan del Sur, and the village of Bunawan, the entrance to the 24,000-hectare Agusan Marsh. This is not a tourist town. Few travellers stop here; they usually pass through on the bus heading straight for Davao. A few hostels are scattered around, more accustomed to seeing a few local tourists disembark. San Francisco is typical, with its large central market surrounded by informal jewelry shops where gold is the main precious material. Mount Diwata overlooks the city. A reforestation program (DENR) maintains the mountain's environment, which has become a government protected area.
