In the northern part of the Sulu Sea, well away from Palawan's larger islands although still belonging to the region, forty islands form the Cuyo Islands to the south and the Quiniluban Islands to the north. There are excellent snorkeling sites on the reefs around the islands of Manamoc and Pamalican. The old town of Cuyo, with its church-fortress, has preserved its Hispanic cultural heritage. 7 km2 of coral reefs surround it, making a lagoon appear on more than half of the island. The seabed of the island and its surroundings is a protected reserve, prohibiting all fishing and anchoring.
