Created in 1994, this area of 1,030 km² is mainly covered by steppes, part of which is the Dagurian steppe, particularly rare and fragile. It is divided into two parts. The larger one is located in the north, along the Russian border, and consists of steppes and wetlands, bordered by Lake Tari Nuur. Another, smaller area encompasses the course of the Uldz River, which is home to seven species of fish as well as a large population of white crested cranes. About 70% of the world's representatives of this endangered species nest in the protected area.The area is also home to six of the fifteen rare crane species, some of which are endangered, such as the hooded, Siberian and damselfly cranes. In all, more than 260 species of birds can be observed in the protected area. Among them are the endangered whooper swan, the mandarin duck, the great bustard and the relict gull.Mammals are also well represented, with 26 different species, including wolves, wild dogs, raccoons, red foxes, Mongolian gazelles and deer. In terms of flora, the site also has a great diversity of species, with many endemic or rare plants.The area lends itself well to activities such as hiking, fishing, camping and photography.
