This dry steppe is entirely virgin of human presence, on 5 704 km². It is protected since 1992 and consists of two parts, Menengiin Tal and Lagiin Khooloi. A real sea of high grass, the steppe is dotted with rare plants that represent 10% of the protected flora in the country. This area is classified to preserve the ecosystem, but also to ensure the safeguard of the Mongolian gazelle. The herds, sometimes 40,000 strong, migrate through the reserve and can easily be observed during the breeding season. There are also rare bird species such as white crested cranes, steppe eagles and great harriers.
