This vast area of 1.2 million hectares is shared between the aimag of Khentiy and Töv. It is covered with dense forests (10% of Mongolian forests), highly irrigated land, tundra and eternal snow, clinging to the peaks of the Khentiy range, whose highest peak culminates at 2 800 meters. It is the place of transition between taiga and steppe.The protected area has many historical sites, including Turkish man-stones dating from the5th century or steles and obelisks written in Chinese and Turkish, which are estimated to date from about the same period. A few reindeer stones are also scattered in the area.
