Rising in the Khangai mountain range, and flowing for more than 800 kilometers to Lake Airag, the Zavkhan River follows the western and northern border of the Govi-Altaiaimag. It passes through glacial areas, steppes and finally a sandy desert before reaching its final destination.Situated on the Govi-Altai and Zavkhan aimag , the Mongol Els are sand dunes sometimes covered with a short vegetation. With a length of 330 kilometers and a total area of 2,724 km ², they accompany the river Zavkhan to the mouth of Lake Airag.
