Prehistoric site, the most important in Kenya, with a 1,900 m rocky spur and a museum exhibiting Neolithic remains
Along with Kariandusi, Hyrax Hill is the most important prehistoric site in Kenya. Archaeology enthusiasts and the curious must go there. On a rocky spur that rises to 1,900 m, the site, discovered in 1926, has revealed remains dating from the late Neolithic period. All the finds are displayed on site in the dedicated museum. Hyrax Hill takes its name from the hyrax, or damsel, a small mammal that lives in rocky habitats and was once found in large numbers on the site before the accelerated urbanization of the area.
