One of the Borana's main activities is collecting salt from the crater lakes. This takes place in the middle of the dry season, around January, when evaporation leads to maximum salt saturation of the sludge. This is done on foot, whereas during the other seasons, the "salt forcats" are sometimes obliged to dive to depths of up to 5m. To avoid damaging their clothes, most of the men slip naked into the dark, salt-saturated waters of the lake, and use large wooden poles to cut out bundles of black sludge. Some of the harvest is fed to animals, while others are refined for human consumption.
