Jonas Šliūpas (1861-1944), Lithuanian physician and politician, devoted his life to his homeland. A long-time resident of the United States, he worked to strengthen Lithuanians' national confidence. Critical of the Catholic Church, he became a controversial figure in the eyes of many conservative Lithuanians. Nevertheless, his commitment to his country remained steadfast. He settled in Palanga and became its first mayor in January 1933. His house is now a museum in his memory.
