In the 13th century, the Teutonic Order built several castles around Sigulda, including Krimulda. In 1625, the King of Sweden offered the Krimulda estate to his advisor, and his ancestors sold it in 1817 to Baron Iohan Liven. The latter created a large park with promenades, long wooden staircases leading down to Gauja... The place became so popular that Russian Tsar Alexander II stayed there with the Empress in July 1862. Today, the manor house functions as a hotel-spa, as well as a fruit wine and liqueur distillery.
