Like a peninsula lost in the middle of an ocean with intense blue waters, the Qal Jaber citadel was once a stronghold on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Euphrates. Since the construction of the Assad Dam below, it has been surrounded by water. It is in a rather unreal setting that the fortress reveals the power of its ramparts, whose color of land contrasts with that of water.During the I Crusade, the old Selçuk fortress was incorporated in Edesse County before passing to the hands of the Zenguides in 1149. The remaining ruins date back to the reconstruction of the citadel by Noureddin from 1168, which made it a point of resistance to the crusades. Mongolian invasions will mark the end of the use of the edifice for defensive purposes.
