Tan Yeok Nee, originally from Teochew, made his fortune in the pepper and gambier trade. In 1885, he built himself a superb house. It is the only one of its kind in Singapore. It features large granite columns and is home to many beautiful sculptures imported from China. After Tan Yeok Nee's death, the house had a motley crew of owners: a stationmaster, a bishop, the boarders of a girls' school and even the Japanese army during the occupation, then the Salvation Army.
