MARCHÉ AUX POISSONS

The fish market is one of the main places of activity in Male. It comes alive from 3pm onwards, when the dhonis come back from fishing. The men do the chain to unload the fishes to the market hall. The bonito are stored on the tiled floor and are cut up on the spot. We also see tuna, swordfish, groupers, parrotfish and some barracudas. The ritual of choosing the fish is reserved for men and you will see few native women in this market. That said, the presence of foreign women is not unwelcome.
