By far the most famous Maldivian for driving out the Portuguese invaders in 1573, Mohammed Thakurufaanu lies in a tomb near a small mosque, the Bihuroazu Kamanaa Miskiiy, located on Neelafaru Magu in the centre of the island. One of the largest avenues in Male, Boduthakurufaanu Magu (Marine Drive), which means great Thakurufaanu, as well as the Islamic Centre Mosque, also have names that commemorate this national hero.
