Ansongo, 95 km from Gao, halfway between Gao and the Niger border, is a beautiful village, battered by the desert storm. Little tourist, the reception is still authentic. To get there, there is the car (about 2 500 FCFA) or pinasse (about 1 500 FCFA). In the latter case, count about 10 hours of boat. There are very nice walks.Ansongo-Menaka's partial wildlife reserve spans over 1 750 000 ha between Ansongo, Menaka and the Niger loop. A 4 x 4 is required to make the visit. Tacharane and Hausa-Foulane are two villages near Gao towards Ansongo, where there is a good chance of seeing hippos. However, if you take a regular Pinasse Gao-Ansongo, you are unlikely to be able to go and return to the day. For this you will need to rent your own pinasse. It is noted that the Ansongo-Menaka region is strongly discouraged by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
