Travel Guide Songho

The beautiful village of Songho is about 15 km from Bandiagara. You must take the road from Sévaré over 10 km, then turn right. The 3 km track is feasible by car. Songho is a picturesque patrician village, even if it is completely islamized. Built at the foot of a hill, Songho is an example throughout the country concerning the organisation of tourist reception. Your guide will let you visit the village (toguna, greniers…), caves with cave paintings, a cave where musical instruments are kept for the great ceremonies, the forge and the weavers'workshop. Rock paintings, red and white, represent animals and masks. They are replenished each year during circumcisions. Circumcision ceremonies take place in December and January. The blacksmith circoncit the children of the village each year and their symbolic entry into adulthood. The guide will even show you traces of blood on the rocks where the surgical act is done!
