This small village of 5,000 inhabitants is home to one of the largest archaeological areas in the north of the country, Paquimé. It was in pre-Hispanic times the most important city in northern Mexico and one of the largest cities of the Great Chichimeco. Built in 1200, the city reached its peak between 1300 and 1450. The Paquimés left impressive constructions that testify to an extraordinary system of distribution and conduction of water within its walls. The architecture of the residential areas and ceremonial centres bears witness to a well-organised society, where craftsmen achieved a high degree of specialisation.
