The capital of the state of Sonora was built in the place of the stronghold of the indigenous Pimas. The city was founded in 1700 under the name of Santísima Trinidad del Pitic, before being renamed Hermosillo in 1828. It has a population of just under 900,000 and is quite large, giving it the air of an American city, typical of northern Mexican towns. There are very few old buildings left in the city, with the possible exception of the Villa de Seris district, which is within walking distance of the city centre; don't expect any architectural wonders either. The most motivated will climb the Cerro de la Campana to admire a sumptuous sunset over the city. Beware, it is very hot all year round and the temperatures in summer are very high (over 40°C).
