"Hanal Pixan", the food of souls given to the dead on All Saints' Day, refers today to the festivities of the Feast of the Dead.
"Hanal Pixan" is the food traditionally offered to the dead during All Saints' Day in the Yucatán Peninsula. By extension, the word now refers to the festivities of the Festival of the Dead. In Mérida, the Hanal Pixan is celebrated with great pomp and circumstance, with an exhibition of altars and a procession in disguise - the "Paseo de las Ànimas" - that starts at the Iglesia de la Ermita and ends at the General Cemetery. It is a very popular event, resulting from the syncretism between Mayan traditions (skull and crossbones, cempasúchil flowers, Indian music) and the Halloween festival.
