This natural abyss, located at an altitude of more than 1,800 metres, is one of the most imposing in the world, with a diameter of 500 metres and a depth of 450 metres, 400 of which are in free fall. Formed 1.5 million years ago, it is home to a complete ecosystem and the last colony in central Mexico of the endangered guacamaya verde . The Sótano del Barro is part of the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve. As such, its access is now reserved for observation and forbidden to cavers. You have to get there early in the morning (from 6am) to be able to listen to the cries of the birds waking up and taking off from the depths, as they set off on a long day of searching for food and then return at the end of the day. The experience may only last a few minutes, but it is well worth the trip.
