CARIBBEAN MOUNTAINS
Guadeloupe's oldest mountain range with a hiking trail to discover the Caribbean Mountains.
This is Guadeloupe's oldest mountain range, quite distinct from the Soufrière volcano. The Caribbean Mountains extend over more than 1,000 hectares in an exceptional environment linked to both Amerindian and colonial history. They are a veritable ecological sanctuary. The site is bordered by a variety of landscapes. For experienced hikers only, as access can be difficult for novices. You can hire a mountain guide. These hiking trails (approx. 4 hours) allow you to discover the Caribbean mountains from the village. Covering 1,370 hectares and spread over the communes of Gourbeyre, Vieux-Fort and Trois-Rivières, this mountain range culminates at Vent Soufflé (687 m).
This sporty loop takes you south of Basse-Terre to discover the two types of tropical forest that exist in Guadeloupe, with a dry part by the sea and a wetter part at higher altitudes.
To the north are the Houëlmont massif (428 m) and Morne Boucanier (481 m). You pass from the Côte au Vent to the Côte Sous-le-Vent. From Gros Acajou to ravine Grand-Fond, the vegetation offers a wide variety of flora and fauna. If you remember to bring binoculars, you'll be able to observe all kinds of birds: turtle doves, partridges, thrushes, Guadeloupe woodpeckers... Lush vegetation is everywhere: tropical flowers, anthuriums, sweet peas, trumpet wood, hemlock and bamboo clumps on the ground, and much more.
