POINTE-A-PITRE HERITAGE DEPARTMENT
Heritage service in the municipal center, offering themed tours with tour guides.
Discover the history of Pointe-à-Pitre in the company of guides accredited by the Villes et Pays d'Art et d'Histoire label. The city has held this label since 2002. It is awarded by the French Ministry of Culture to local authorities that promote their heritage.
These visits are an excellent opportunity to discover the forgotten face of this city, the archipelago's historic economic capital. In this municipal center, which houses the Heritage Department, guided thematic tours of Pointe-à-Pitre are organized on a monthly basis. The program is published every month, and tours last an average of 1h30 in the company of one of the fascinating guides accredited by the French Ministry of Culture.
These tours are based on a number of themes that evolve over the years. Among the recurring themes on offer, you can take a stroll through the heart of the old town to discover Pointe-à-Pitre's squares and learn about the city's urban evolution since the 18th century. Alongside the squares and major monuments, you'll discover the history of the streets honoring key figures in the history of Guadeloupe, including Frébault, Éboué, Gourbeyre, Schoelcher... and Saint-John Perse, who is the subject of a poetic stroll. One tour is dedicated to Creole speakers: An ka sonjé Lapwent (meaning "I remember Pointe-à-Pitre"). Tours on request, up to 6 people.
