The sanctuary developed around the basilica built on the place where the Virgin Mary appeared to a 17 year old shepherd, Benedicta Rencurel from 1664-1718, in an isolated hamlet at an altitude of 900 meters. During the first four months, the Virgin Mary appeared to him where his flock was grazing.
