Medieval castle-museum, one of the best preserved in the West, the museum in the dungeon offers a permanent exhibition

The castle sits at the heart of Noirmoutier-en-l'Île. A true emblem, even appearing on the new logo of the city, the castle of Noirmoutier, is a strong anchor of the Noirmoutier landscape. Built at the end of the 12th century by Pierre V, Lord of La Garnache, this medieval castle is one of the best preserved in the West. Around 1690, Josse Hertsfelt, governor of the island, had the governor's residence built and opened the current entrance, facing the port. In the 18th century, the castle was used to store military equipment, then it became a military fortress until 1895, when it was demilitarized. Inside, you can see the chair in which General d'Elbée was assassinated in January 1794, during the Vendée War. Located in the dungeon, the museum evokes the island's history with a permanent exhibition on the various prehistoric archaeological sites and the evolution of the castle from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. Each year it hosts a new exhibition. The 2022 exhibition plunges into the Middle Ages as a source of inspiration for comics. The visit ends at the top of the keep with a remarkable panoramic view. Guided tours (in French and English) are offered in July and August. Also during school vacations (except summer ones), children's workshops are offered upon reservation. The castle of Noirmoutier is classified as a historical monument and its museum is labeled Museum of France.

Exhibition at the foot of the castle during holiday All Saints' day 2012. You could not visit the castle on the other hand you will return
