Grotto of Lourdes, known for the apparitions of Our Lady on the rock of Massabielle, caves are spread in the Vendée

According to the author of Grottes de Lourdes en Vendée, the Vendée has 46 grottes de Lourdes. The apparitions of Our Lady occurred in 1858 on the rock of Massabielle in Lourdes. The first pilgrims from the Vendée went to Lourdes in 1872. On their return from this pilgrimage, the idea was born to build caves in the Vendée. To celebrate the centenary of the apparitions of Lourdes, Monseigneur Cazaux, bishop of Luçon, inaugurated a grotto at Les Essarts in 1958. The 46 caves are spread over 41 communes, including 4 in Les Herbiers, 2 in Chavagnes-en-Paillers and Saint-Laurent-sur-Sèvre.
