CASTLE OF MONTSOREAU-MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART
Built around 1450 in the bed of the Loire, this first Renaissance castle in France hosts temporary exhibitions
Magnificent construction erected around 1450 in the bed of the Loire by Jean II de Chambes, adviser to Charles VII and Louis XI, associate of Jacques Coeur, the castle of Montsoreau can only seduce with its Gothic and Renaissance architecture. It is the first Renaissance castle in France and the only one built in the bed of the Loire, on the Mont Soreau, a few blocks from where the Vienne joins the Loire, at the intersection of Anjou, Poitou and Touraine. More than 150 years after Alexandre Dumas, author of La Dame de Montsoreau, the art collector Philippe Méaille fell under its spell... He took the initiative to create a museum of contemporary art which has an architecture and exhibition spaces out of the ordinary. It is a radical and committed place, a temple of conceptual art, associated with a cultural program reflecting the creative expression of some of today's artists. Innovative, experimental, exciting for some, disconcerting, incomprehensible, questionable for others, always unexpected, the works presented in the vast rooms of the castle do not leave anyone indifferent, provided that one has a particular sensitivity towards contemporary creation. The Château de Montsoreau - Museum of Contemporary Art is the most important collection of works of the Art & Language movement in the world. It hosts two to three temporary exhibitions per year, as well as conferences.
