LES CALADES DE MONTOULIERS

Montouliers is a charming Mediterranean village situated on a small hill at the gateway to the Minervois and Saint-Chinian AOCs, nestled around a church and a former castle that once belonged to the Archbishops of Narbonne. This village has a particular curiosity: calades. They are steep and narrow streets, paved with pebbles. These charming alleyways are an integral part of the architectural heritage. They are the result of ancient know-how. The craftsman who specialized in the caladage of pavements was, in Occitan, the caladaire. Outside the Languedoc, you can see calades in Provence, in the county of Nice and in Corsica, witnesses of what was once the pavement in Mediterranean villages.
