SAINT-PIERRE-DE-RHÈDES

The priory of Saint-Pierre-de-Rhèdes, the oldest historic building in the Orb valley, rests on the foundations of an ancient Christian sanctuary dating back to the ^4th century. It became a parish church in the ^10th century and belonged to the Villemagne Abbey from 1182 onwards. Despite destruction during the Wars of Religion, the church was restored in the ^17th century. Its two portals adorned with basalt inlays and mysterious inscriptions add to its charm. Considered a jewel of rural Romanesque art, the priory was listed as a historic monument in 1880.
