LUNDI PUR ET AGAS

Pure Monday, or Kathara Deftera in Greek, marks the beginning of Lent, 40 days before Easter. Everywhere, it is an opportunity for families to fly kites. But on the island of Chios, this day gives rise to a unique celebration: the Agas take place in the main square of the villages of Mastichochoria, especially in Mesta and Olympi. In memory of the Ottoman arbitrariness, a parody of court puts in scene a judge, his policemen and prosecutors who make fun of the inhabitants of the village in a great moment of satire. All in a very good-natured atmosphere.
