LEONARDO DA VINCI'S LAST SUPPER
Read moreBy entering the dining of the old Dominican convent, we are facing the most famous fresco of art history, La Cène, da Vinci de Vinci. This fresco (9 m x 5 m), made between 1495 and 1498, represents Jesus to the Apostles the betrayal of one of them. The colours of the Supper did not support the passage of time, because of the technique used by the painter. A great inventor, Leonardo did not paint "a fresco" (fresh) but, in order to modify the work as he pleases, he used on a dry wall a mixture of oil pigments. Twenty years later, moisture and dirt had already altered the masterpiece. The Supper underwent several restorations over the centuries, up to the one that came up nearly twenty years ago and made her splendour and original colours. It should be noted in passing that this restoration has not been unanimous among experts, particularly with regard to the brightness of colours.
