On this date the baptism of Jesus is celebrated and in all the islands the pope throws a cross into the sea as a sign of blessing.

In the Orthodox rite, the Epiphany does not celebrate the worship of the Child Jesus by the Magi as in the Christian rite of the West, but the baptism of Jesus in the waters of the Jordan by Saint John the Baptist. We call him Theophany. In all the islands of the Dodecanese, the pope blessed the waters and threw a cross into the seas. Divers who are not very fearful or very religious, especially in Symi and Kalymnos but also elsewhere, then jump into the sea to try to recover the sacred cross. Processions are organized.
