August 15 (Assumption of the Virgin Mary) is a major event in Italy. The Romans leave the city for the countryside or the seaside.
This important day in the Christian calendar celebrates the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It is also an ancient popular festival, the Ferragosto, which celebrated the abundance and the end of the harvest with joy. In mid-August, most Italians are on vacation and the country's main seaside resorts are full. August 15 often rhymes with grigliata (barbecue), which is shared with friends. There are concerts and dances in most of the seaside towns, as well as beautiful fireworks shows that conclude the day.
