On Saint Basil's Day (Agios Vassilis, Greek Santa Claus), Greek children go round the houses singing .
In Greece, the end-of-year festivities (Christmas and New Year's Day) are celebrated above all on Saint Basil's Day, January1. This is when the "Orthodox Santa Claus", Agios Vassilis, gives presents to Greek children, who go round the houses singing kalanda. They taste vassilopita, a brioche scented with orange blossom in which a flouri, a coin, is hidden: whoever finds it will have good luck for the rest of the year. Traditionally, the first 4 slices are offered to God, Jesus, the Virgin Mary and the house.
