The carnival of the island of Dominica, nicknamed "The Real Mas", mixes French and African traditions to the sound of calypso.

This eagerly-awaited event attracts many visitors for its authenticity and originality. Floats and costumes are prepared for months on end. A month before the start of Carnival, the festivities begin with an official opening ceremony featuring shows, village fêtes and competitions, including the Carnival Beauty Queen contest and the election of the King of Calypso (a popular Dominican musical genre).
